Fast forward to 2026, and the digital world is an immersive, AI-driven environment that fits in your child’s pocket – and it’s designed to keep them there.

If you feel like you’re losing your child to a glowing screen, you aren’t alone. But understanding the why and the how is the first step to bringing them back.

The Evolution of the “Hook”: 2005 vs. 2026

In the early 2000s, social media was a destination you visited. Today, it is an ecosystem that follows your child everywhere.

2005: Platforms like MySpace and early Facebook were about connection. You checked them, then logged off.

2026: Modern platforms use hyper-personalized algorithms and “variable reward” systems. Every swipe provides a hit of dopamine, creating a biological loop that makes “just five more minutes” turn into five hours.

The Mirror Effect: How Digital Media Validates Their Thoughts

One of the most dangerous aspects of social media addiction isn’t just the time spent – it’s the Echo Chamber.

Digital media uses algorithms to show your child exactly what they want to see, which validates their current thoughts – even the harmful ones.

Confirmation Bias: If a child feels insecure or anxious, the algorithm feeds them content that mirrors those feelings, making them feel like their negative thoughts are the “only” reality.

Social Validation: Their self-worth becomes tied to “likes” and “views.” If a post performs well, they feel validated; if it doesn’t, they feel invisible.

Red Flags: Is Your Child Addicted?

Watch for these symptoms that go beyond typical “teenage moodiness”:

Withdrawal: Becoming irritable, anxious, or even aggressive when the phone is taken away.

Tolerance: Needing more time on the app to achieve the same “high” or sense of satisfaction.

Neglect of Hygiene: Skipping showers, meals, or sleep to stay online.

The “Phantom” Vibrate: Reaching for a phone even when it hasn’t buzzed. When a child spends 6+ hours a day consuming “brain rot” content, their brain loses the “stamina” required to read a 20-page chapter or write a cohesive essay. They begin to think in fragments, making the structure of the English language feel foreign and exhausting.

Taking Back the Reins

It’s not about banning technology; it’s about reclaiming balance.

Model the Behavior: Put your phone away at dinner.

In West Bengal, where culture, tradition, and family ties run deep, mental health remains a silent crisis shrouded in stigma and misunderstanding. Despite growing awareness, the persistent taboo surrounding mental health continues to devastate an entire generation, leaving countless individuals trapped in silence, shame, and suffering. As a psychiatrist practicing in Bengal, I have witnessed firsthand how stigma erodes lives, families, and communities—and why urgent change is needed.

The Burden of Mental Health Stigma in Bengal

Mental health stigma in West Bengal is deeply rooted in cultural norms, misinformation, and fear. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, or schizophrenia are too often dismissed as “weakness,” “madness,” or even “spiritual disturbance.” Seeking psychiatric help is sometimes viewed as a sign of personal failure or a source of family disgrace. This perception spans both rural and urban Bengal, where awareness remains limited despite growing access to information.

Young adults in Bengal are especially vulnerable. They face immense pressure to excel in studies, secure well-paying jobs, and meet family expectations—often while battling mental health issues in silence. The fear of being judged by peers, employers, or relatives prevents many from reaching out for professional help. As a result, mental illnesses go untreated, leading to broken ambitions, fractured relationships, and, tragically, loss of life.

A Generation Silenced

The effect of stigma on Bengal’s youth is profound. Many young people hide their struggles, fearing they will be labeled “unstable” or that it might harm their career or marriage prospects—concerns that remain widespread. By the time some seek professional help, their conditions have often worsened to the point of crisis, requiring intensive treatment.

Data reflect this reality. The National Mental Health Survey of India (2015–16) estimated that nearly 15% of Indian adults need mental health intervention, yet only a small fraction actually receive it. Suicide rates among young people in India are alarmingly high, and West Bengal contributes significantly to these numbers. A 2018 study in The Lancet revealed that India accounts for 36.6% of global suicides among women and 24.3% among men, with stigma being one of the key barriers to care.

Cultural Barriers in Bengal

In many parts of Bengal, mental illness is still viewed as a personal shortcoming rather than a medical condition. Families often discourage therapy, relying instead on religious rituals, traditional healers, or the hope that the individual will simply “get over it.” This delay in seeking treatment only deepens suffering and complicates recovery.

Gender norms add another layer to the challenge. Women are frequently told their symptoms are “emotional” or “hormonal,” while men are pressured to suppress their emotions to appear strong. Both suffer silently under the weight of cultural expectations.

The Ripple Effect on Society

Stigma doesn’t just harm individuals—it weakens the social fabric of Bengal. Untreated mental illnesses reduce productivity, strain family relationships, and increase healthcare costs. A generation struggling silently under mental distress cannot realize its full potential. For a state rich in creativity, intellect, and heritage, this represents a serious loss of human capital and promise.

A Call to Action for Bengal

The people of Bengal are known for their intellect, creativity, and resilience. Yet resilience alone is not enough when stigma silences those who need help the most. It is time to build a society where seeking support for mental well-being is as natural as visiting a doctor for physical health.

Every conversation counts. Talk to a friend, share information, and reach out to a mental health professional if you or someone you know is struggling. Together, we can ensure that this generation—and the next—are not lost to silence, but empowered by understanding, empathy, and care.

Every year, Schizophrenia Awareness Day reminds us of something powerful: understanding starts with unlearning. Schizophrenia is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions, often trapped behind outdated stereotypes and silence. Today, we invite you to break that silence.

Schizophrenia doesn’t mean “split personality” or “dangerous behavior.” It’s a complex, treatable brain disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and interacts with the world. It can involve hallucinations, delusions, or disorganized thinking—but it also involves courage, resilience, and often, recovery.

Sadly, stigma still overshadows the science. Many people with schizophrenia face not just the symptoms of their condition, but judgment, fear, and isolation. That’s why awareness matters. Awareness leads to empathy. Empathy leads to change.

This year’s message is clear: Let’s change perspectives. Let’s move beyond fear and misinformation. Let’s see the person before the diagnosis. Let’s amplify the voices of those who live with schizophrenia—not just their challenges, but their strength, creativity, and humanity.

Whether you’re a student, a healthcare worker, a friend, or just someone curious to learn—your willingness to understand makes a difference. Talk about it. Share facts. Question myths. Offer support. Listen.

Mental health affects us all. The more we know, the kinder we become.

So today, take a moment to reflect, read, and reach out. Because changing minds starts with opening yours.

Pets have been cherished companions for centuries, offering companionship, security, and emotional support. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 84% of pet parents report a positive impact on their mental health due to their furry (or not-so-furry) friends.
Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is an evidence-based intervention using trained animals like dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and even dolphins to support individuals with mental health conditions.
What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting communication, social interactions, and behavior. The term “spectrum” reflects the wide range of abilities and challenges autistic individuals experience. While some excel in areas like mathematics, music, or art, others may need support with daily activities.

The Rising Prevalence of Autism

Over the past few decades, autism diagnoses have increased significantly due to improved awareness, better diagnostic tools, and broader diagnostic criteria. Today, approximately 1 in 68 individuals are diagnosed with ASD, with a higher prevalence in males.

Burnout in Indian, European, and Chinese Companies

A 2023 Microsoft Work Trend Index survey found that 59% of Indian employees experience burnout, significantly higher than the global average (48%). Assocham (2022) reported 77% of Indian employees suffer from stress-related disorders. In Europe, 44% of employees report work-related stress (EU-OSHA 2023), with France, Germany, and Spain seeing higher burnout than Nordic nations. China officially reports ~35% work related stress, but the “996” work culture (9 AM–9 PM, 6 days a week) in tech and finance leads to high dissatisfaction.

Major Causes

India: Long hours (10-12 daily), lack of work-life balance, toxic work culture, job insecurity, and understaffing.

Europe: Work intensity, over-reliance on digital tools, remote work stress, and economic uncertainty.

China: Extreme work culture, intense competition, and limited labor protections.

Effects of Burnout

India: High attrition (IT/startups), hypertension, insomnia, depression, and productivity decline.

Europe: Absenteeism, long-term sick leave, structured mental health policies.

China: “Lying flat” (躺平) movement, resistance to overwork, dissatisfaction in finance and consulting.

Government vs. Private Sector

India: Lower burnout in government jobs except in healthcare, police, and bureaucracy.

Europe: Better work-life balance (e.g., France’s 35-hour workweek).

China: Stable hours in government, but high efficiency pressure.

Private Sector: IT, finance, and startups experience maximum burnout in all regions.

Burnout by Profession

Conclusion

Burnout is highest in Indian and Chinese workplaces due to long hours, weak labor laws, and job insecurity, while Nordic European countries mitigate burnout with better policies. IT, healthcare, and finance remain the most affected sectors. To reduce burnout, flexible work schedules, wellness programs, and workplace reforms are essential.

John Forbes Nash Jr. was a genius mathematician whose groundbreaking work in game theory revolutionized economics and decision-making. Born in 1928 in Bluefield, West Virginia, Nash showed an exceptional talent for mathematics from a young age. His brilliance earned him a place at Princeton University, where he developed the Nash Equilibrium, a concept that remains fundamental in economics, biology, and artificial intelligence.

However, despite his extraordinary intellect, Nash’s life took a dramatic turn in the late 1950s. At the height of his career, he began experiencing delusions, paranoia, and hallucinations—symptoms of a severe mental illness that would challenge him for decades.

The Onset of Schizophrenia

Nash’s behavior became increasingly erratic. He believed he was receiving secret messages from extraterrestrials and that he was involved in an international conspiracy. His academic colleagues noticed his declining mental state, and in 1959, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia—a chronic brain disorder that distorts thinking, emotions, and perception of reality.

Understanding Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. The symptoms are typically classified into:

Positive Symptoms (Psychotic Features):

Hallucinations – Seeing or hearing things that are not real (e.g., hearing voices).

Delusions – Strong, irrational beliefs (e.g., thinking one is being followed or part of a secret mission).

Disorganized Thinking – Incoherent speech, jumping between unrelated topics.

Negative Symptoms (Emotional & Social Impairment):

Lack of motivation and difficulty expressing emotions.

Social withdrawal and difficulty maintaining relationships.

Cognitive Symptoms (Impaired Thinking Abilities):

Trouble focusing or remembering things.

Difficulty making logical decisions.

Schizophrenia is often misunderstood—it does not mean having “split personalities” but rather a fragmented perception of reality. The exact cause is unknown, but it is linked to genetics, brain chemistry, and environmental factors. Treatment typically involves antipsychotic medications, psychotherapy, and social support.

Nash’s Struggle and Recovery

Nash spent years in and out of psychiatric hospitals, undergoing treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy and powerful antipsychotic drugs. The illness robbed him of his academic career for a time, and he withdrew from society. However, in the 1970s, he made a remarkable decision—he gradually distanced himself from his delusions without relying heavily on medication.

Through sheer willpower, the support of his wife, Alicia, and a return to intellectual work, Nash managed to regain stability. His incredible resilience allowed him to return to Princeton, where he continued to work in mathematics.

The Nobel Prize and Legacy

In 1994, Nash was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his work on game theory. This was not just a recognition of his mathematical genius but also a testament to his unbreakable spirit in the face of mental illness.

His life was immortalized in the 2001 film “A Beautiful Mind”, starring Russell Crowe. The movie highlighted both his brilliance and the harrowing struggle with schizophrenia, bringing public awareness to the condition.

Sadly, in 2015, John Nash and his wife, Alicia, died in a car accident, but his legacy lives on—both as a pioneering mathematician and as an inspiration to those battling mental illness.

Final Thoughts

John Nash’s life teaches us that even in the darkest moments, hope, resilience, and support can lead to recovery. His story is not just about mathematics but about the human mind’s ability to overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.
