Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive actions or mental rituals (compulsions) carried out to reduce distress. OCD is treatable. Dr. Purvita Sarkar Ray provides assessment and treatment for OCD. Dr. Ray has a particular clinical interest in OCD and its related conditions.
Common signs of OCD
- Repeated, unwanted thoughts, images or urges
- Excessive washing, cleaning or checking
- Counting, ordering or repeating actions
- Seeking reassurance again and again
- Spending a long time each day on these thoughts or actions
When to see a psychiatrist
Consider help if obsessions or compulsions take up significant time, cause distress, or interfere with daily life.
How OCD is treated
After assessment, treatment commonly includes a form of CBT called exposure and response prevention (ERP), and, where appropriate, medication. Treatment is planned with the patient and reviewed over time.
A focus on OCD
OCD can take many forms and is often misunderstood, which can delay the right help. Dr. Ray has a special interest in recognising and treating OCD and related conditions, including intrusive thoughts, contamination fears, checking, and reassurance-seeking, across adults, adolescents and children.
