Bipolar affective disorder involves marked changes in mood, energy and activity — periods of low mood (depression) and periods of elevated or irritable mood (mania or hypomania). With treatment and regular review, it can be managed well. Dr. Purvita Sarkar Ray provides assessment and treatment for bipolar disorder.
Common signs
- Episodes of depression (low mood, low energy, loss of interest)
- Periods of unusually high energy, reduced need for sleep or rapid speech
- Increased impulsivity or risk-taking during high phases
- Big shifts in mood, activity and judgement
When to see a psychiatrist
Seek help if mood swings are affecting sleep, work, finances or relationships, or if others have noticed marked changes in behaviour.
How bipolar disorder is treated
After assessment, treatment usually involves mood-stabilising medication, regular review, and psychoeducation to help recognise early warning signs. The plan is individualised and adjusted over time.
