Anxiety disorders involve worry or fear that is persistent, out of proportion to the situation, and interferes with daily life. They are among the most common mental health conditions and respond well to treatment. Dr. Purvita Sarkar Ray assesses and treats anxiety in adults, adolescents and children.
Types and common signs
Anxiety can take several forms, including generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety and specific phobias. Common signs include:
- Constant worry that is hard to control
- Restlessness or feeling on edge
- Racing heart, breathlessness or chest tightness
- Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
- Avoiding situations that trigger fear
- Sudden episodes of intense fear (panic attacks)
When to see a psychiatrist
Seek help if anxiety is frequent, distressing, or stops you doing everyday things such as work, travel or meeting people.
How anxiety is treated
After assessment, treatment may include talking therapy such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), breathing and relaxation strategies, and, where appropriate, medication. The approach is tailored to the person and reviewed over time.
